that for like the first couple thousand years of human history all we did was tell and retell and retell stories

until like the 18th century nobody wanted to hear about new characters they wanted to hear about their old faves

mythology exists in a million different varied stories

dante’s inferno was self-insert bible fanfic

shakespeare got a lot of his ideas by retelling stories he’d found elsewhere or even events that had actually happened

arthurian legend probably went from folktale to high literature to every other adaptation it now has

it can be argued that everything is a retelling of some basic archetype because billions of us have been telling millions of stories for thousands of years, and we do it to connect to people

so yeah, i’m glad that originality became prized and allowed fiction to expand into the beautiful varied forms that it occupies today

but don’t fucking tell me that retellings and aren’t valid

yeah, sometimes they get tired and overdone

yeah, sometimes hollywood does it because they know it’ll make money

that doesn’t mean nobody put love and heart into the making of it, because people are passionate about stories and the only reason you’d retell something is because you or somebody else loves it

so if you’re gonna shame people and condescend to them for doing what humans have been doing since we could speak and think and dream

just don’t
