So, I was thinking about BBC Sherlock fandom’s hate-on for Sally Donovan, and just earlier today I was talking with Maria about Tara Thorton’s shitty treatment in True Blood.
And then I made myself a list.
You’re not fooling anyone, fandom. I know what’s up.
They want these women to be invisible and get upset when they’re not. Then they’re bitches, sexless (i.e. no chemistry with ANYONE), or sluts. And it’s not like the show writers don’t have the same problem, those tropes are a consistent fallback when it comes to any major characterization of black female characters. But when they step out of those tropes (Bonnie becoming more assertive, not just a support system for the white female lead; Martha wanting the Doctor to see her in a romantic way, not just as a support system for the white lead; Gwen being the LOVE object of several male characters, not just a support system for the white lead) fandom goes apeshit cause their worldview is being messed with. These women are not supposed to be important, loved, complicated in their minds, just easily forgotten once the episode is over.

Top Ten: Martha Jones is Flawless
1. The Last of the Time Lords (3x13)You don’t have to love Martha Jones, but you have to respect her. She accomplished so many things, even though most of the time, she was undervalued, under-appreciated, or just completely unnoticed. She never complained about why the Doctor didn’t love her or why he treated her badly. She just watched his back and took care of him, and when it came time, she left - she got out. Not because she was abandoning the Doctor, but because she needed to go. She needed to live her life, she needed to move on from the Doctor and her unrequited feelings, and she needed to help her family after the year of torture they went through. Some people say Martha Jones was being selfish, but that’s not true. If you had to choose between all of time and space with the man you are in love with, or staying home and fixing a family broken by a year that never was, wouldn’t you prefer to run away? And keep running with the Doctor - away from all that responsibility? But no, Martha stayed to helped her family and save the world over and over again. She wasn’t selfish; she was strong. It must have been incredibly hard for her to walk away from him, but she knew that she needed to. She was incredibly brave. Martha Jones, you truly are a star.

I never forgave Ten for how he treated Martha.
Trufax. Martha never got the respect she fully deserved.
Martha was a panicky, useless slut who repeatedly threw herself at the doctor when he’d just lost Rose. She spent episode after episode getting captured by enemies, or else flapping her arms around pointlessly and screaming while the doctor saved her bony little arse for the billionth time. I never forgave Martha for how she treated Ten.
Ten wasn’t exactly open about his relationship with Rose with Martha. Additionally, she saved his ass repeatedly as well, and did just fine on her own traveling the Earth to spread the Doctor’s message. She was an intelligent companion, quick with her mind and on her feet. It’s a common plot device in Doctor Who that the companion gets in trouble and the doctor does the rescuing. Martha isn’t the only one who frequently needed rescuing.
Calling Martha a slut because she knew what she wanted and came out and said it? Slut shaming a woman for being strong and direct? When discussing the series that gave us Captain Jack Harkness? Slut shaming has no place in a discussion about a character. Going after the man you want rather than playing it coy is admirable.
She wanted the Doctor, came out and said it because she didn’t want to spend anymore time following someone who couldn’t love her back. Martha left the Doctor to care for her family, who saw horrific things. That’s a strong woman willing to sacrifice for the people she loves.

person wasn’t actually watching the series and/or didn’t completely comprehend what was going on.
Martha was one of the most capable and amazing companions the Doctor had. She had the gall to stick up for herself while the Doctor was too busy being angsty and whiny about Rose. If he had stopped and looked for a second he would’ve seen how brilliant and amazing she really was. I’m not sure how Martha is panicky or useless when she:
1. Was calm, cool, and collected when the hospital was transported to the Moon.
(Doctor: We might die. Martha: We might not)
2. She uses a Harry Potter reference to save the world from evil witches
3. She HELPS her kidnappers to find a way out in Gridlock
4. Stands by the Doctor when they’re facing the Daleks and is always trying to come up with solutions. Not to mention her humanity is something to be admired.
5. She sacrifices herself in The Lazarus Experiment to save not only the Doctor, but everyone else who was in that terrible situation
6. She helps and stands by the Doctor in 42, doing everything she can to save him and keep him calm. Like the Doctor she is.
7. She protects John Smith even though it hurts her to do so.
8. She supports the Doctor financially in Blink.
9. She walks the Earth ALONE to SAVE THE WORLD.
10. She generally doesn’t take shit from anyone. Not to mention she works for UNIT, holds the Osterhagen key, has the Doctor on speed dial, and so on.
Now can you tell me where in this short list of accomplishments how she is panicky or useless? NOPE.
Martha hate is so annoying, because it’s so ridiculously unfounded. So you liked Rose COOL, don’t let that get in the way of seeing what an amazing person Martha is. Take off the “rose-tinted” (I’m so punny) glasses for a second and appreciate Martha’s amazingness. All of the companions leave at one time or other, THAT’S HOW IT WORKS.
